Valuable Tips on How to Choose the Right Plastic Cosmetic Surgeon

There has been a massive rise over recent years in the number of people making the decision to undergo some form of plastic or cosmetic surgery. Many claim the jump in these procedures is being led by millennials and what is referred to as “Instagram Vanity”. The younger generations are striving for “Instagram perfection” with the biggest jumps being seen in Lip Fillers, Botox, Brazilian Butt Lifts and Breast Implants … with Brazilian Butt Lifts being named as the hottest growing plastic surgery procedure for last year, however, breast implants still remain the number one elective surgery.

It was reported in the US that some 24,099 Brazilian Butt Lifts were carried out in 2018. It seems that millennials in particular are telling their doctors they want to look the same in real life as they do in their snapchat filters. Instagram and Snapchat have altered people’s perception of beauty. We are now living in the era of the filtered photograph, however, it seems that filtering/altering the photograph is no longer enough.

Whether you are opting to go under the knife or have chosen to use a less invasive procedure, selecting the right medical practitioner for you is vital. You have to remember that you could be stuck with the consequences of your chosen procedure for months, years or even forever.

Top 10 Tips – How to choose the right Surgeon

The Medical Council of Ireland has put together a list of recommendations for patients considering surgical cosmetic procedures. Outlined below are questioned that should be asked and answered in advance of undergoing any cosmetic medical procedure.

  1. Research – What outcome are you looking for? What procedures are available to you in order to achieve this outcome? These are questions you should research in advance of your consultation.
  2. Advice from your GP – Depending on the procedure you are considering you should, where possible, seek advice from your GP. Your GP should have knowledge of specialist consultants in your area and also have the best knowledge of your health and background.
  3. The Medical Council – Ensure that the surgeon you are meeting with is a registered plastic surgeon. The Medical Council suggests checking that they are registered on medicalcouncil.ie on the Specialist Register of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. You can also enquire with the surgeon if they are registered as full members of The Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons www.plasticsurgery.ie
  4. Don’t do Discount – Never choose a procedure on the basis of price alone. People can easily be tempted by discount offers.
  5. Consultation and surgery – You should never feel pressured into undergoing surgery. All reputable plastic surgeons will insist on a minimum 10 day cooling off period between consultation and surgery.
  6. Ask Questions – Do not be afraid to ask questions and ensure that you fully understand all paperwork before signing anything.
  7. Testimonials – Look the surgeon up online, see what other patients have said about them.
  8. Case Studies, before and after – Ask to see before and after pictures of other patients that have undergone the procedure you are interested in. Do you like the surgeon’s “style”, meaning are you looking for a more subtle result than you are seeing in these pictures or maybe the results are too subtle for your taste. Make sure that their aesthetic sense appeals to you.
  9. Follow up care – Ensure to enquire about follow up care. Who to contact and where to go if there is a problem.
  10. One to One – Always insist that your consultation takes place with the surgeon that will be performing the procedure and not a colleague or representative of the clinic.
